The National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP) sets and coordinates standards for allied and healthcare education and professional practice, maintains the national registration framework, and identifies recognised professional categories and qualifications. The Commission became effective on 8 January 2024 under the NCAHP Act, 2021—not a new 2026 Act.
The Registration of Allied and Healthcare Professionals Regulations, 2026 were notified on 31 August 2026 and published in the Gazette of India on 9 September 2026. They came into force on publication and explain registration, renewal, professional records and related processes under the 2021 Act.
Physiotherapy is listed as a recognised professional category. Students should compare the exact degree title, duration and study mode with Schedule I and confirm the latest eligibility requirements with the relevant State Council or NCAHP before relying on a course for professional registration.
Professional practice is linked to entry in the applicable State and Central Registers. Where no functional State Council exists, the regulations provide for registration through NCAHP. A student must obtain interim registration before beginning an internship, training, observership or practical training required for the qualification.
Registration is valid for five years. Renewal requires 75 hours of Continuous Professional Development over five years, with at least 15 hours each year and no more than half completed online, subject to the Commission’s current guidance.
